Broad-leaf waterleaf has 5-petaled blossoms which have 5 stamens that extend beyond the .5-inch corolla, as with most members of the waterleaf family. There are several blossoms in a cluster usually below the topmost leaves. The hairy filaments give the blossom cluster a fuzzy appearance. The flowers are white to lavender.

Due to the palmate shape of the leaf of Hydrophyllum canadense , it is sometimes referred to as maple-leaf waterleaf. Broad-leaf waterleaf is probably the most common name used for this species, but possibly due to the potential for confusion with H. macrophyllum, which has the common name of Large-leaf Waterleaf, the official USDA national common name for H. canadense is Bluntleaf Waterleaf.
