Verbesina alternifolia - Wingstem, Yellow Ironweed. This is a tall, yellow-blossomed plant found throughout most of the midwest and east outside of New England. It is listed as Threatened in New York.

Wingstem has from 2 to 10 reflexed yellow ray flowers, and the disk flowers are in a loose spherical shape.

The inflorescence is at the top of the stem, perhaps as much as 9 or 10 feet above the ground, which is why this photo is from below.

Verbesina alternifolia gets the species epithet from the long, rough-feeling, lanceolate alternating leaves. A similar species with opposite leaves is Verbesina occidentalis - Yellow Crownbeard.

The lanceolate leaves of Wingstem are on petioles which extend down the stem as wings, giving the plant its Wingstem common name.
