Scutellaria pseudoserrata - Southern Showy Skullcap, Falseteeth skullcap. There are 45 species of Scutellaria found in United States, 42 of which are native. At least one Scutellaria species is found in every state except Hawaii. S. pseudoserrata is found in 5 southern states - Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Similar species are S. elliptica, which has blue to violet flowers with white markings and hairy leaves, S. montana, which is almost entirely white with a lavender lower lip, and S. serrata, which may not have the distinct dark lavender lines exhibited by S. Pseudoserrata near the center of the lower lip.

Scutellaria pseudoserrata flowers have the signature skullcap shape with two distinct lips. Upper lip forms a hood, and the lower lip has 3 lobes - a central raised lobe separating two side lobes. Showy Southern Skullcap has 2 dark lavender or purple lines near the raised central lobe on the lower lip.

Southern Showy Skullcap has several mostly white blossoms on a terminal raceme atop a square stem typical of the mint family. Similar species S. elliptica will typically have multiple racemes in the inflorescence arising from the leaf axils of the upper leaves.

The leaves of Scutellaria pseudoserrata are opposite and petioled. The plant is up to about 2 feet tall.
