Pink Ladies, Showy Evening Primrose, Pink Primrose - Oenothera speciosa

Family: Onagraceae - Evening Primrose family Genus Common Name: Evening Primrose Native Status: NativeDicot Perennial Herb Subshrub
Oenothera speciosa - Pink Ladies, Showy Evening Primrose, Pink Primrose. While the USDA Plants Database shows Oenothera speciosa as native to 27 of the lower 48 states, it is apparently native only to the central part of the United States. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center mentions a native status in Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It apparently has been introduced and naturalized in the other 22 states where it is found. While it is an attractive plant with a long bloom season, use caution because it can spread vigorously.

GA roadside near Davis Crossroads. Notice the large crossed stigma, a feature that points one toward the evening primroses. The large stamens in this are the typical yellow. The pink veining is common but not always present.

A colony of Oenothera speciosa. The stems are typically reclining, so while they are up to 2' long, the blossoms are usually found much closer to the ground than that.
