Cutleaf Geranium, Cut-leaved Cranesbill - Geranium dissectum

Geranium dissectum - Cutleaf Geranium, Cut-leaved Cranesbill. A native of Europe, Cutleaf Geranium is a weedy plant is found in 29 states. It grows to about 2 feet tall - or this may be considered 2 feet long, since it is often prone. The stem is densely pubescent - covered with short hairs, as is the rest of the plant. The petioled leaves are alternate and deeply, palmately lobed. The main lobes of the lower leaves are also lobed. The lobes of the lower leaves are usually much broader than on the upper leaves.

A similar species is the United States native Carolina Geranium (Geranium carolinianum), except Carolina Geranium has paler pink - almost white - blossoms, and the upper leaf lobes are broader.

The deep pink - almost red blossom is not much more than 1/4" across, so the plant isn't especially showy, but the flower is quite lovely when viewed closely. As with the rest of the plant, the flower's pedicel and calyx are pubescent.

The fruit is a glandularly pubescent, elongated pod of the shape that gives wild Geraniums the alternate common names of Cranesbill or Storksbill.
