Gaillardia pinnatifida - Red Dome Blanketflower, Hopi Blanketflower, Yellow Gaillardia, Slender Gaillardia, Cutleaf Blanketflower.
There are about a dozen species of Blanketflower native to the United States, plus a hybrid cultivar (G. xgrandiflora) which has naturalized in several states. At least one species is found in every state. Most of these are in the western half of the country, and Gaillardia pinnatifida is one of those western species, found in well drained soils of the plains and open forests from Texas north to Kansas and west to Arizona and Nevada. Gaillardia pinnatifida blooms mostly from May through July, but may be found occasionally as early as March and as late as October.

Gaillardia pinnatifida has 5 to 14 ray florets, although it occasionally will have none. They are yellow (sometimes tinged with purple at the base or backside) and deeply 3-lobed at the tip.

The flower head of Red Dome Blanketflower is about 2 inches across, with the disc forming a (usually) red dome.

The disc of Gaillardia pinnatifida will usually have 60 to as many as 100 fertile florets. The hairy corolla tube, usually purplish on the ends and yellowish at the base (although sometimes fully yellow) is short and wide, giving a good display of the spreading stamens.

Red Dome Blanketflower is usually 1 to 3 feet tall. The leaves are mostly basal, with some smaller stem leaves on the lower part of the stem.

The peduncles and phyllaries of Gaillardia pinnatifida are hairy.

Both the cauline (stem) and basal leaves of Gaillardia pinnatifida are usually pinnately lobed, although there are reports that they are occasionally entire.
