Eastern daisy fleabane - Erigeron annuus

Erigeron annuus - Eastern daisy fleabane. There are 191 species in the Erigeron genus, with some species being found in only a single state. Eastern Daisy Fleabane is one of the more widespread species, found in all but 7 states. It is a native plant in both the continental United States and in Canada.

Erigeron anuus is generally 2 to 3 feet tall, branching with many white-rayed, yellow-centered blossoms. It blooms from mid- to late spring on through most of the summer months. It is differentiated from the earlier blooming Philadelphia Fleabane (E. philadelphicus) by narrower leaves which do not clasp the stem, and is differentiated from similar Prairie Fleabane (aka Lesser Daisy Fleabane - E. strigosus) by having stems which are distinctly hairy, and by usually having toothed leaves.

Like almost all Erigeron species, Eastern Daisy Fleabane has numerous ray flowers and yellow disk flowers. E. annuus has fewer than 100 ray flowers. Philadelphia Fleabane (aka Common Fleabane - Erigeron philadelphicus) is similar, but usually has 150 or more ray flowers.

The leaves of Erigeron annuus are frequently toothed. The lower leaves have distinct winged petioles (leaf stems), which decrease in length further up the plant until they are almost sessile.

The stem of Eastern Daisy Fleabane is distinctly hairy, with the hairs standing erect from the stem, unlike similar Lesser Daisy Fleabane (Prairie Fleabane - Erigeron strigosus) which has shorter hairs which lie against the stem. Note that the leaves of E. strigosus are also usually entire rather than toothed.
